On 8-9 February 2024, Mr. Yilmaz Buyukaydın, member of the PABSEC Turkish delegation, and Mr. Asaf Hajiyev, PABSEC Secretary General, took part in the 2024 Parliamentary Hearings of the Inter-Parliamentary Union at the UN, in New York, in which participated the parliamentarians from IPU Member Parliaments, representatives of international organizations, experts and high officials. The two-day event focused on the theme “Putting an End to Conflicts: Prescriptions for a Peaceful Future.” The opening speeches were made by Mr. Dennis Francis, President of the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly (Trinidad and Tobago), and Ms. Tulia Ackson, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (Tanzania). During the working sessions the following issues were discussed: future of peace and security; international law vs. the law of the jungle; redefining security; climate change and conflict; women, youth and other groups working for peace; parliamentary diplomacy for peace; technology for evil vs. human progress. During the discussions, the participants emphasized the importance of the common goals of the UN and the IPU within the framework of multilateral global cooperation and the role of parliaments in solving topical global problems and implementing the UN resolutions. The need to strengthen cooperation on security and climate change issues was emphasized. The PABSEC delegation met with Ambassador Yashar Aliyev, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the UN, and Ambassador Sedat Onal, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Türkiye to the UN. The security situation in the BSEC region and the Middle East were discussed.
