Mr. Asaf Hajiyev, PABSEC Secretary General, participated in the 29th Session of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29), which was held in Baku from 11 to 22 November 2024. The COP29 Conference was chaired by Mr. Mukhtar Babayev, Minister of Ecology of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The Conference started with a two-day Climate Summit on 12-13 November, which was attended by nearly 80 heads of state and government, UN Secretary General Mr. Antonio Guterres, President of the European Council Mr. Charles Michel, representatives of international organizations, as well as representatives of business and civil society, scientists, experts from around the world. The opening speech was delivered by the UN Secretary General Mr. Antonio Guterres, who emphasized the urgency of combating climate change. The aim of the conference was to update the global climate budget and limit the rate of global warming by reducing carbon dioxide emissions. The COP29 Presidency put forward 14 initiatives covering sustainable development and emission reduction issues, including the creation of green energy corridors and technologies, the development of clean hydrogen and green digital infrastructure. Mr. Asaf Hajiyev, PABSEC Secretary General, participated in the session “Financing the regional transboundary cooperation in addressing climate change”. He emphasized the importance of investing in science and education, as well as the opening of new specialties such as climate change engineers, and new educational institutions specializing in the development of technologies and practices to mitigate the effects of climate change. The Secretary General spoke about the PABSEC activities in the field of combating climate change. On November 16-17, within the framework of the 29th Session of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29), a Parliamentary Meeting was held, jointly organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan. More than 160 parliamentarians, including 12 speakers and vice-speakers, a total of 330 participants from 66 countries and international organizations took part in the Meeting. Opening the event, Ms. Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan, noted the importance of integrating the green agenda into national development programs, implementing renewable energy projects and creating green energy zones. It was noted that climate change is a major problem that goes beyond national borders and requires joint efforts of all mankind. The Parliamentary Meeting discussed the real consequences of climate change, the role of parliaments in implementing national objectives, developing global climate finance architecture, increasing resilience to climate change, promoting a comprehensive and equitable approach, using technologies to combat climate change, and ensuring equitable access to these technologies. During the discussions, the heads and members of parliamentary delegations, as well as representatives of international organizations, noted the importance of COP29 in combating climate change. At the end of the Meeting the Outcome Document was adopted. Mr. Asaf Hajiyev, PABSEC Secretary General, took part in the Parliamentary Meeting and had meetings with representatives of international parliamentary organizations.
