On 15–16 October 2026, Mr. Asaf Hajiyev, PABSEC Secretary General, participated in the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), held in Rome, Italy, hosted by the Italian Parliament. The opening ceremony featured addresses by Mr. Lorenzo Fontana, President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, Mr. Ignazio La Russa, President of the Senate of the Italian Republic, and Ms. Petra Bayr, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. The Conference brought together Presidents and Speakers of national parliaments, representatives of international parliamentary assemblies and other high-level participants to exchange views on contemporary challenges facing European democracies and the role of parliaments in addressing them. The discussions focused on three main themes: “Resilient democracies: united against hybrid threats”, “Artificial Intelligence and the labour market”, and “Renewing the rules-based international order: the role of parliaments in addressing and responding to contemporary crises”. Mr. Hajiyev also attended the Meeting of the Secretaries General of Parliament, held on 16 October 2026. In his intervention, he drew on his experience as a Member of Parliament and emphasised the importance of sustained dialogue between parliamentarians and their electorates in strengthening public trust in parliamentary institutions. He suggested exploring the possibility of organising visits by delegations of parliamentary assemblies to member countries, including meetings with citizens to promote a better understanding of the role and responsibilities of parliamentarians and how they can help address citizens’ concerns. On the sidelines of the Conference, Mr. Hajiyev met with Mr. Giulio Centemero, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), and Ambassador Sergio Piazzi, PAM Secretary General, and invited them to participate in the forthcoming 68th PABSEC General Assembly, to be held in Athens, Greece, on 23–25 November 2026.
